Awards, reviews and press…
For a small business, it is so lovely to be recognised by our customers and the organisations around us. We have been delighted by the impact we have made to date – we offer something really different in the toy market and, well, people seem to like it!
Here are some of our proudest achivements to dates, alongwith some of your comments – thank you so much!
Let Toys Be Toys
Whirligig were contacted not long after we first opened by this amazing campaign. Set up by a group of friends from Mum’s Net, they aim to ensure that children can select the toys that they want to play with. By working with retailers, publishers and manufacturers, they aim to include all children in play by reducing the amount of stereotypical images and words used in packaging and promotion of toys.
Whirligig were delighted to be the first retailer in the country to win the Toymark – a badge of quality recognising our approach and the toy environment we have created. We recently celebrated our 5th anniversary of this award and are also the first chain of shops to be awarded the Toymark.
Independent Retailer Awards 2018
Whirligig was invited to the House of Commons in 2018 to pick up our Highly Commended award in the Independent Retailer of the Year awards.
This was a fantastic achievement for us and recognised our customer service and attention to detail, amongst a group of dynamic businesses who are thriving in the high street by giving a great experience to their customers.
A wonderful day out and a great opportunity to meet other fantastic businesses.

Kirstie’s Homemade Christmas
If you were eagle eyed this Christmas, you may have spotted our founder Peter appearing as a judge on Kirstie’s Homemade Christmas!
A great fun day – we were asked to judge the Best Christmas Toy award. A difficult job – great entrants from some lovely creative people.
We were also asked to help Kirstie create a Christmas novelty for the tree – Peter took along a trusty crochet hook and made lovely Christmas robins, and Kirstie helped too!
Canterbury’s Christmas Window
Many of you were enchanted by the letter we displayed in our window this Christmas in Canterbury. Found in an Oxfam shop, it was a letter from 5 year old Marjorie from 1898, asking for a simpler Christmas list containing ducks and fishes and a ribbon for her cat, Kitikins.
We were featured on BBC South Today, twice, and were able to tell Marjorie’s family all about the letter and her wishes.
Can’t wait to see what we put in the window this year…
And you have been reviewing us on Google, Facebook and Trip Advisor:
“Fantastic shop: great selection of quality toys and amazing customer service.”
“Brilliant shop that sells such clever and original gifts and toys.”
“Real toys that will last a life time, for decent prices… none of the new plastic toys that break instantly.”
“Great toy shops are extremely rare and this was like winning the lottery!! It has all the fantastic wooden brands that I love but also some that I’ve not heard of. We bought a wooden version of mastermind which I’ve played every day several times and also with other campers. The lady in the shop was helpful and very knowledgeable of all products which is great and very helpful. This is the first of many items that I will purchase.”
“Lovely shop with a great selection of items, staff here are really knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend a visit.“
